An Overview of the Zimmer Kinectiv Hip Recall
Approved by the FDA in 2007, the Zimmer M/L Taper Hip Prosthesis with Kinectiv Technology is a hip replacement system. Manufactured by Zimmer Inc., the device is comprised of modular stem and neck components designed to alleviate the leg length, joint stability and range of motion challenges that tend to develop during hip replacement surgery. The technology gives the surgeon a wide range of sizes to choose from, so he or she can match the device to the patient’s unique body.
However, in 2015 Zimmer issued a recall of this system. It was classified as a Class I recall by the FDA, which is the most serious kind of recall and is only used in situations where there is a reasonable probability that using the device will cause serious health consequences or death. The recall was issued because manufacturing residue was found to be left on the distributed product, which can cause serious problems including:
- Allergic reactions

Other risks and complications
Though the residue provided the catalyst for the recall, it’s not the only complication associated with Zimmer Kinectiv hip implants. There have also been countless reports made to the FDA citing concerns regarding corrosion, fretting, loosening of the device and an excessive amount of metal ions being found in patient blood.
These complaints stemmed from the fact that the Zimmer Kinectiv hip replacement system features the same risks that are associated with all metal-on-metal hip implants. When the metal parts rub against each other while the patient walks or runs, tiny metal particles may be released into the body, damaging the bone and tissue and causing a number of serious complications, including pain, implant loosening and device failure. To treat these complications and attempt to reverse the symptoms, patients who received a Zimmer Kinectiv hip implant may require a complex revision surgery to remove and replace the dangerous device.
What damages can you recover from a lawsuit against Zimmer?
If you or a loved one has experienced injuries or serious complications after receiving a Zimmer Kinectiv hip implant, you may be able to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer. If you win, you may be entitled to recover damages for the following:
- Medical bills. These damages will cover all of your past, current and future medical expenses – including hospital care, medical devices, doctor’s appointments and more.
- Lost wages. If your injuries prevent you from working normally, you may be entitled to compensation for wages you would have earned during that time.
- Pain and suffering. Along with an injury comes substantial physical challenges that need to be dealt with. Your pain and suffering damages will cover these issues, and are determined based on the extent of your injuries.
