Surgical mesh is frequently used by surgeons in a hernia repair procedure. It is manufactured from a woven plastic-like material, or animal tissue. The mesh is placed over the bulge or tear in a weakened area of the abdominal muscles, and permanently affixed.

Hernia mesh is an effective method of preventing hernia reoccurrence by placing a barrier in damaged muscle walls, preventing the organs from pushing through the weakened muscles. Hundreds of thousands of people have undergone surgery for hernia repair, and a large percentage of these patients have had hernia mesh implanted during the procedure.

Serious Complications from Hernia Mesh

Unfortunately for many patients, the type of mesh used in a surgical hernia repair has led to serious complications including:

  • Infections
  • Postoperative hematoma (blood leaking into tissues from damaged blood vessel wall)
  • Organ perforation
  • Mesh erosion
  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Mesh rejection
  • Nerve damage
  • Adhesions
  • Bowel obstructions
  • Mesh migration

FDA Safety Communication for Hernia Mesh

The FDA (Food & Drug Administration) has issued a safety communication to inform people about complications that have been reported to occur with the use of surgical mesh used in hernia repair. The agency states they have received reports of adverse reactions to these products, and further states that these complications were typically associated with mesh products were recalled.

Recalled hernia mesh products include the BCK Patch (Bard Composix® Kugel® Mesh Patch), produced by medical device manufacturer Bard/Davol. These patches were frequently used to repair hernias in patients who, after surgery, had weakened abdominal muscles. Many other patients have reported adverse events from hernia mesh, in some cases from mesh products that have not yet been recalled.
