Types of brain injuries

Brain injuries vary in severity, but any impact on the skull can lead to long term damage. A traumatic brain injury may fall into one of the following levels of damage:

  • Concussion: A concussion was once considered a mild brain injury, but recently it has been established that a series of concussions can lead to a condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy. A concussion is caused by an impact on the head that shakes the brain within the skull. A blow to the head, whether in a car accident, bicycle accident, motorcycle accident, slip and fall, or other incident often leads to long-term physical, emotional, and cognitive damage.
  • Brain contusion: When the brain is bruised and bleeds after an impact, the damage can be life-changing or fatal. Treating these injuries may require brain surgery. The damage can be extensive, leaving the injured person physically and cognitively impaired.
  • Diffuse axonal injury: These brain injuries involve tearing the brain connections due to a powerful impact on the skull. These injuries are often very serious, based on the area of the brain affected.
  • Penetrating injury: When an object penetrates the skull and brain, the damage is typically very severe or fatal. These injuries lead to bleeding, blood clots, and may restrict oxygen flow. These injuries may be the result of a gunshot, or when an object enters the brain as the result of the impact in a vehicle accident.
  • Coup-contrecoup: These injuries occur when a severe impact to the skull causes the brain to hit the skull in the opposite direction of the impact. Both sides of the brain can be damaged. These traumatic brain injuries are common in vehicle accidents, falls, and assaults.
